Costa Rica is a natural paradise. It was considered by the Spanish settlers as a “rich coast”, since it really had an amazing ocean view, beautiful coasts and our natives looked wealthy all covered with golden adornments, that´s why Christopher Columbus called this land Costa Rica. Costa Rica is bordered by the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean, that´s why to save the ocean for Costa Rica is really important and to save the ocean for the rest of the world off course.

Ecotourism to Save the Ocean
Ecotourism is a form of tourism in which you not only visit and enjoy different natural destinies, but contribute with the care and conservation of them. Ecotourism is growing all around the country, since it promotes sustainable tourism with minimum impact on the native species and natural landscapes. Ecotourism includes people traveling around the world, most of the time they are taking vacations but they also are making an extra effort to come and help the endangered species of flora and fauna, enjoying different activities at the same time.
The Ocean… the Largest Victim
The ocean is wide affected by the negative impact of tourism. Infrastructures all around the coastal area, the big hotels, huge amounts of people gathering together in a small area, the cruise ship waste streams, and excessive use of natural resources. Plus, the river´s pollution and unconscious people who think that the ocean is a humongous trashcan is making worst the pollution issue. Some consequences or effects on sea life are;
- Birds get their feathers covered with oil, sometimes they aren´t able to fly and die.
- The gills of fish are covered too, so they die as well.
- Plastic, the biggest enemy, it causes that many sea species perish. Some of them have disappeared forever.
- People might get their skin and eyes irritated, they also might suffer lung and liver diseases because of the ocean pollution.
- Endangered species are potential victims even though they must be protected, the ocean affectation is very extended.
Ecotourism Helps a Lot
Ecotourism safeguards the natural assets and creates a conservation culture and awareness in the surrounding towns. Its principles include diminishing the physical, social, and psychological impacts of traditional tourism, building environmental and cultural awareness.
A simple way to practice ecotourism is showing respect to nature with the smallest things, such as picking up your garbage, not taking or cutting wild plants, or taking wild animals home as pets, etc. Up to big things such as; choosing eco-friendly hotels and accommodations; are small ways to give a big push to save the ocean.
