The Soul of Surfing: A Story of “Pura Vida” and Purpose
The world is changing, and so too is our little slice of paradise here in Costa Rica. Over two decades ago, when we first arrived, our mission was simple and clear: to immerse ourselves in nature, ride the waves, and, most importantly, show deep respect for the local culture that welcomed us. It was a beautiful, humbling experience to feel like a part of the Costa Rican community, learning from its people not just about surfing, but about the unique flora and fauna that make this place so special.
From the very beginning, we had a clear vision. No matter how much we grew, we would always remain a small, family-run operation, deeply rooted in the values of authenticity and respect for this beautiful country that embraced us. Over the years, we’ve had countless opportunities to expand, to become another massive, “industrial” surf camp. But we always held firm to our core belief: our purpose is to share the real “Pura Vida” with our guests—a way of life that goes far beyond a perfect photo on a surfboard or a wild party.
Costa Rica and its people are truly special. This is why we established our Spanish school, so our guests could learn the language and connect with locals on a deeper, more meaningful level. For over 15 years, we have nurtured this small family, keeping its spirit and vision intact.
Perfect Sunset School is, without a doubt, a special place. It’s so much more than just surf, Spanish, yoga, or freediving lessons. It’s a home away from home where our guests feel a genuine connection to life in Costa Rica. While we are a business and several families depend on us, the happiness of our guests has always been, and will always be, our number one priority.
In recent years, the surf industry has exploded. We’ve seen huge corporations with massive budgets move in, overshadowing smaller, more authentic surf camps like ours. The saddest part is that they don’t overshadow us because they offer a better service; they do it with a seemingly endless flow of money for advertising and marketing. They use the latest cameras, high-tech drones, and a dedicated army of influencers to sell a perfectly curated, and often misleading, illusion.
What has happened to real surfing? Where is the pure joy of riding a wave and feeling that powerful, beautiful connection with nature? I know it’s not just the fault of these big companies. The world is changing, and the younger generation is often guided by the allure of social media. A picture on a surfboard in a perfect wave seems to hold more value than a perfect, unrecorded sunset enjoyed with your own eyes.
As a new season begins for Perfect Sunset School, we hope that, even if just for a little while, we can bring things back to what truly matters. We want to help you disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with the sea, with Costa Rica, with its waves, and with a community that exists far beyond social media.
Surfing gives life. Surfing connects us with nature. Real surfing is about feeling, not just filming. It’s about a deep, soulful experience, not a fleeting social media post.
