Pura Vida is one of the most common phrases used by Costa Ricans and it is not just a phrase, it contains all the Costa Rican essence of life and culture.
1. We need to understand the Pura Vida Origin
“Ticos”, the way they are commonly called, are very energetic and always find ways to see every aspect of their life in a positive way.
The exact phrase was first said around the year 1956 after many Costa Ricans watched a Mexican movie called “Pura Vida”.
This movie was a typical comedy Mexican movie, and the main character was interpreted by the actor Antonio Espino y Mora.
He used this phrase throughout the whole movie and it was so meaningful for Ticos that they decided to adopt it as a way of living.
Since the 50s Ticos have applied this popular phrase which really shows the Costa Rican way of living and peaceful culture.
For 40 years this phrase has existed in the Costa Ricans’ hearts so it was included in a special dictionary that comprises all the Costa Rican phrases.
In 1990 “Pura Vida” became a meaningful part of “El Diccionario de Costarriqueñismos” as an important part of this culture.
